Aquadome pool, gym to reopen Thursday; Youth Services staff to work remotely

Feb. 8—The Aquadome Recreation Center and Decatur Youth Services offices were cleared today to reopen after a city contractor found no problems in the Southwest Decatur facility, Mayor Tab Bowling said this morning.

However, Youth Services staff will work remotely for the next seven days while additional monitoring equipment is placed in the building.

The city closed the Aquadome center and DYS employees moved out Jan. 31 for an assessment of reports of a gas smell in the building.

City maintenance crews performed an assessment using Sniffer equipment, but could not detect odors of gas or other fumes in the building, the mayor said.

Bowling said that "out of an abundance of caution" he temporarily closed the facilities and hired Enersolv to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Aquadome areas and DYS offices.

"The results were returned with no-finding for detection of gas leaks, fumes or any other emissions that could be detrimental to citizens or staff utilizing the building," Bowling said.

The Aquadome pool and gym are expected to reopen Thursday.
