Another Mainer has died and 53 more coronavirus cases reported across the state
Jun. 12—Another Mainer has died as health officials on Saturday reported 53 more coronavirus cases across the state.
The number of coronavirus cases diagnosed in the past 14 days statewide is 889. This is an estimation of the current number of active cases in the state, as the Maine CDC is no longer tracking recoveries for all patients. That's up from 943 on Friday.
It's the ninth straight day when Maine saw new coronavirus cases slip below the triple digits, a level of transmission that seemed unthinkable this past winter when infections surged well over 800 a day at times. It comes as Gov. Janet Mills on Friday declared that the civil state of emergency Maine has lived under since April 2020 will finally be allowed to expire June 30.
A man in his 70s from Washington County has succumbed to the virus, bringing the statewide death toll to 845.
Saturday's report brings the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 68,540, according to the Maine CDC. That's up from 68,487 on Friday.
Of those, 50,136 have been confirmed positive, while 18,404 were classified as "probable cases," the Maine CDC reported.
The new case rate statewide Saturday was 0.40 cases per 10,000 residents, and the total case rate statewide was 512.10.
Maine's seven-day average for new coronavirus cases is 55.9, down from 62 a day ago, down from 72 a week ago and down from 269.6 a month ago. That average peaked on Jan. 14 at 625.3.
The most cases have been detected in Mainers younger than 20, while Mainers over 80 years old make up the majority of deaths. More cases and deaths have been recorded in women than men. So far, 2,047 Mainers have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. Of those, 48 are currently hospitalized with 28 in critical care and 14 on a ventilator. Overall, 85 out of 378 critical care beds and 242 out of 319 ventilators are available. Meanwhile, 451 alternative ventilators are available.
The total statewide hospitalization rate on Saturday was 15.29 patients per 10,000 residents.
Cases have been reported in Androscoggin (8,355), Aroostook (1,884), Cumberland (17,196), Franklin (1,362), Hancock (1,370), Kennebec (6,555), Knox (1,142), Lincoln (1,075), Oxford (3,620), Penobscot (6,279), Piscataquis (573), Sagadahoc (1,471), Somerset (2,257), Waldo (1,043), Washington (927) and York (13,431) counties.

An additional 934 Mainers have been vaccinated against the coronavirus in the previous 24 hours. As of Saturday, 731,507 Mainers have received a first dose of the vaccine, while 744,421 have received a final dose.
New Hampshire reported 28 new cases on Saturday and no deaths. Vermont reported six new cases and no deaths, while Massachusetts reported 131 new cases and eight deaths.
As of Saturday morning, the coronavirus had sickened 33,450,121 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as caused 599,498 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
