Annual LEGO Holiday Display at HB Sound & Light opens to the public

Dec. 6—GRAND FORKS — After weeks of planning and building, the annual LEGO Holiday Display is once again wowing the public in Grand Forks.

The display is put together by the Grand Forks LEGO User Group, which started building around Halloween. People can view a festive holiday city scene featuring downtown landmarks along with other notable sites that are well-known in Grand Forks including the Red Pepper and the North Dakota Mill and Elevator.

The seventh-annual LEGO Holiday Display at HB Sound and Light opened to the public on Saturday, Dec. 3, and will continue this weekend.

Tricia Lunski, who owns HB with her husband, Jamie, said they were both "blown away" at the number of people who viewed the display the first year it was set up. During that time Lunski said many people expressed interest in building with LEGOs, which was when the GFKLUG club was formed.

The only year there wasn't a holiday LEGO display was in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then the display has grown, with a total of 542 base plates being used for the city portion this year.

Pat Wilber, who viewed this year's display with her husband, Russ, said she is amazed by the new things added to the display each year. The additions replicate the expansion of the city, she said.

"They're building Grand Forks bigger every year, so every time you come there are more buildings that you recognize, which is a lot of fun," Wilber said. "Every time I come it's something different."

Tricia Lunski said she has enjoyed seeing the community enjoy the display each year. On Friday, Dec. 2, a preview of the display was held for attendees 21 and older with Far North Spirits cocktails being served by Ely's Ivy. Lunski said they sold out of tickets for the adults-only event.

"It's been great seeing the community excitement for it," Lunski said.

Wilber said the display is a "treat for the community" noting all the families who show up to view it.

"It's just a wonderful event," she said.

The display will be open once again from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 10, at the HB Sound & Light headquarters at 101 N. Eighth St.
