Annual Bev Ball Classic volleyball tournament begins Friday at Abilene High, Cooper
The annual Bev Ball Classic volleyball tournament begins Friday with 22 teams, including Abilene, Cooper and Wylie high schools, playing 38 best-of-three matches in pool play at Abilene High’s Eagle Gym and Cooper’s Cougar Gym.
The top two teams in each of the five pools, plus the third seed from two other pools, will advance to the championship bracket Saturday at Eagle Gym. The rest of the field will play in the silver bracket at Cougar Gym.
Holliday, a Class 3A school, is back after reaching the title match last year, losing to Class 3A Bushland.
Burleson (2019) and Boerne Champion (2018) are recent tournament champions, and both Class 5A teams return.
Champion beat Class 3A Wall for third place last year. Wylie beat Class 3A Clyde, another returnee, for the consolation title.
Krum, a Class 4A team, beat Class 5A Lubbock Coronado for the silver bracket last year. Both also return.
Big Country squads Jim Ned, Hawley and Sweetwater – the latter which reached the third-place match in the silver bracket last year – also will compete in the tournament.
Keep an eye on Coronado and Monterey, who are both in District 4-5A with AHS, Cooper and Wylie. It’s AHS’ first season in the UIL’s second-largest class. Burleson and Fort Worth Brewer also play in Region I-5A with District 4-5A.
