Ankeny softball team enjoys red-hot stretch

The Ankeny softball team beat Ballard 9-4 and Davis County 9-0 on June 24 at the Ankeny Prange Softball Classic.

Leading Ankeny vs. Ballard were juniors Rylee Riesberg and Kennedy Palmer. Riesberg went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in while Palmer finished with a double and two RBIs.

Palmer had another strong game vs. Davis County, going 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBIs, while junior pitcher Kendra Winfrey was solid in the circle, finishing with six strikeouts in six innings for the win.

Ankeny continued winning through the weekend, downing Pleasantville 12-2 on June 25. Junior Reagan Enright led the team at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while senior pitcher Ashtyn Billings grabbed the win with seven strikeouts in five innings.

The Hawks closed out the weekend with a win over Estherville Lincoln Central on June 25, winning 7-2. Palmer once again had a good game, leading the team with three RBIs.

Ankeny then began its week with a doubleheader against Marshalltown on June 27, winning big in both games. The Hawks won game one 12-0, led by Winfrey, who went 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Senior Mariah Parton was 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Ankeny took game two 15-3, with Parton, Enright and senior Eva Fulk all finishing with two RBIs each.

The Hawks will look to continue their win streak when they play Fort Dodge in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. June 29 at Ankeny High School.

Centennial baseball finishes weekend strong

The Ankeny Centennial baseball team had an up-and-down weekend, ending it with a win.

The Jaguars began the weekend taking on Dowling Catholic on June 24, winning 6-3. Leading the team was junior Damin Churchman, who hit a home run and had a team-high three RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Joey Oakie had a solid game with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Centennial then competed in the Brent Prange Classic on June 25, falling 15-5 to Bishop Heelan in its first game.

The Jaguars bounced back in the next game, defeating Coon Rapids-Bayard 11-1 on June 25. Juniors Kyle Miller and Nick Severson and sophomore Sean Stewart led the team with two RBIs each. Stewart also had a good game on the mound, with six strikeouts in five innings for the win.

The Jaguars will look to build on the win when they take on Ames in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. June 29 at Ames High School.
