Angelo State baseball team hosts Colorado Mesa for Super Regional

The No. 6-ranked Angelo State University baseball team will host 10th-ranked Colorado Mesa in a best-of-three games NCAA D-II Super Regional on Friday and Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

The winner will advance to the D-II College World Series in Cary, North Carolina on June 4-11. The Rams are trying to make it back for the second-straight year and the fourth time overall under longtime head coach Kevin Brooks.

Game 1 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, followed by Game 2 at 3 p.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, will follow at approximately 7 p.m.

ASU improved to 48-11 after eliminating Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M-Kingsville in three games at home this past weekend in the Rams' section of the South Central Regional. The Rams are the top seed in the region.

Colorado Mesa (42-15) , the No. 2 regional seed, won two of three games against St. Edward's to wrap up its section of the South Central.

The Rams and Mavericks have met six times, with both teams winning three games.

In the last meeting, ASU held on for a 5-2 victory at home against the then No. 1-ranked Mavericks in the South Central Regional last year.

ASU has won 21 of its last 22 games. The Rams pushed their winning streak to 20 games before Kingsville won Game 2 of the regional 12-11.

The Rams' top hitters are: outfielder Justin Lee (.453 avg., 20 doubles, 4 triples, 8 home runs, 77 RBIs); second baseman Austin Beck (.423 avg., 16 doubles, 4 triples, 6 HRs, 58 RBIs); first baseman Aaron Walters (.398 avg., 20 doubles, 1 triple, 9 HRs, 81 RBIs); outfielder Thomas Cain (.390 avg., 9 doubles, 2 HRs, 23 RBIs); infielder Jordan Williams (.375 avg., 14 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 37 RBIs); outfielder Koby Kelton (.364 avg., 16 doubles, 2 HRs, 44 RBIs); and infielder Justin Harris (.357 avg., 10 doublees, 1 triple, 6 HRs, 36 RBIs).

ASU's top pitchers are: Benjamin Elder (9-2 record, 3.28 ERA, 80 strikeouts); Aaron Munson (9-2, 4.45 ERA, 77 Ks); Carson Childers (8-1, 5.28 ERA, 78 Ks); Jackson Haga (5-1, 5.54 ERA, 32 Ks); and Kyle Moseley (3-2, 3.55 ERA, 34 Ks); and Jake Rogers (10-2, 6.14 ERA, 50 Ks).

Mesa's top hitters are: catcher Haydn McGeary (.480 avg., 17 doubles, 1 triple, 31 HRs, 73 RBIs); infielder Caleb Farmer (.419 avg., 19 doubles, 3 triples, 27 HRs, 83 RBIs); outfielder Julian Boyd (.414 avg., 8 doubles, 2 HRs, 27 RBIs); infielder Stevenson Reynolds (.388 avg., 1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, 13 RBIs); outfielder Johnny Carr (.384 avg., 10 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HRs, 27 RBIs); catcher Spencer Bramwell (.380 avg., 15 doubles, 1 triple, 22 HRs, 64 RBIs); and outfielder Conrad Villafuerte (.358 avg., 16 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HRs, 34 RBIs).

The Mavericks' top pitchers are: Kannon Handy (9-1, 4.19 ERA, 93 Ks); Ryan Day (6-1, 5.18 ERA, 60 Ks); Cooper Vasquez (5-3, 5.84 ERA, 51 Ks); Dave Henderson (4-3, 7.47 ERA, 31 Ks); Blake Rohm (4-1, 2.48 ERA, 44 Ks); and Frankie Fitzgerald (3-2, 6.28 ERA, 20 Ks).
