Andrew Luck won't practice this week as Colts inch closer to naming Week 1 starter

Last week, Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich told reporters he wanted to name the team’s Week 1 starter following the Colts’ third preseason game. If Reich sticks to that line of thinking, Andrew Luck won’t start Week 1 of the regular season.

Luck will not practice this week as he continues to recover from a leg issue, according to Reich. The 57-year-old Reich said Luck’s injury is a matter of “full-speed movement vs. pain threshold” right now.

The team has been secretive regarding Luck’s injury for most of the preseason. Luck, 29, was initially out with a calf injury. That quickly morphed into an ankle issue after team owner Jim Irsay said Luck was dealing with a “small little bone.”

Despite that diagnosis, the Colts said they remained optimistic about Luck playing in Week 1. Around that same time, Reich said he wanted to name the team’s starter after Week 3 of the preseason.

Jacoby Brissett will continue to lead the Colts while Luck is out. If Luck has to miss games during the regular season, Brissett will be the team’s starter. Brissett held that role in 2017, starting 15 games while Luck recovered from a shoulder issue. Brissett threw 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions that season.

While Reich set that deadline, he doesn’t necessarily have to stick to it. If Luck proves to be healthy before the regular season, he’ll likely start over Brissett.

With that said, the regular season is quickly approaching. Week 1 is just 19 days away. Luck doesn’t have that much time to get back on the field if he’s hoping to start Week 1.
