Andrew Heller: Shepherd defeats Kutztown in overtime in men's basketball

Jan. 23—Senior forward Kyle Daggett made two free throws with two seconds left to lift Shepherd over Kutztown 65-63 in overtime in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East game Saturday at Keystone Arena.

Daggett finished with a career-high 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Rams (2-6, 6-8), who snapped the Golden Bears' two-game win streak.

KU (3-7, 6-10) won against Bloomsburg and West Chester in their previous two games by hitting winning shot as time expired.

The Golden Bears trailed 33-26 at halftime, by 11 early in the second half and by eight at 59-51 with 5:08 left before coming back.

Kutztown tied it on a pair of free throws by Michael Smith III with 33 seconds left in regulation. Shepherd's Jon Preston missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left. Smith missed a layup at the buzzer.

In overtime, Kutztown went p 63-61 on a dunk by Akeem Taylor Jr. with 2:56 left, but didn't score again. The Golden Bears went 1-for-9 from the field and 0-for-1 from the line in the overtime.

Shepherd, which shot 1-for-6 from the field in OT, tied it on a jumper by Daggett with 54 seconds left.

Kyree Generett missed for Kutztown nine seconds later. Shepherd then missed two shots, but got the offensive rebound each time, the second by Daggett, who was then fouled and hit the winning free throws.

Freshman Jalen Bryant missed a 3 at the buzzer for Kutztown.

Bryant had a team-high 19 points and Smith 11 for the Golden Bears.

For Shepherd, freshman guard Jarod Robinson scored 12 points, while senior guard Cam Stephens contributed eight points.

Alvernia 76, York College 69: At York, Malik Green scored a team-high 27 points to lead the Golden Wolves (5-4, 10-5) over the Spartans (2-7, 6-8) in a MAC commonwealth game.

Jacob Stroud jumper gave the Golden Wolves a seven point lead at 27-20 midway through the first half.

Shortly after, York responded with a 21-9 run to take a 41-36 halftime lead.

Green had 11 points in the second half as Alvernia outscored York 40-28.

Keon Taylor and Avery Walker each scored 10 in the second-half comeback for the Golden Wolves.

David Giuliani led York with 14 points.

Women

Kutztown 63, Shepherd 47: At Keystone Arena, Rylee Derr scored 18 points to lead the No. 24 Golden Bears (9-2, 16-4) over the Rams (12-3, 6-3) in the PSAC East.

Kutztown and Shepherd came into the game as the top two teams in the division.

Shepherd made 4-of-5 3-pointers to take an 18-17 after the first quarter. Kutztown responded by outscoring Shepherd 22-10 in the second quarter to take a 39-28 halftime lead.

The Golden Bears had a 15-2 run in the third quarter and a 9-2 run in the fourth to put it away.

Sydney Clayton led Shepherd with 12 points.

Alvernia 53, York College 62: At York, Bradi Zumbrum scored a career-high 21 points as the Spartans (8-1, 14-3) completed the season sweep of the Golden Wolves (2-7, 8-8) in a MAC commonwealth game.

Jordan Karmonick led the Golden Wolves with 14 points.

Kayla Ferris had 10 points and 12 rebounds for York.

The Spartans improve to 11-6 all-time against Alvernia as York extends its win streak to six straight against the Golden Wolves.
