Sofia Vergara is set to play a "ruthless" real-life drug lord in Netflix's new drama Griselda, and the show's recently released first-look photo showcases the transformation the Modern Family star underwent to do so.

Developed by Narcos showrunner Eric Newman, the outing is set to explore how Griselda Blanco established one of history's most profitable cartels back in the 1980s, ferrying illegal substances between Colombia, New York, Miami and California, and earned herself nicknames such as La Madrina and the Black Widow.

At the height of her notoriety, Blanco was considered one of the richest and most dangerous women in the world, having become the first-ever billionaire female criminal before she was fatally shot on September 3, 2021, at the age of 69.

Alberto Guerra (Narcos: Mexico), Vanessa Ferlito (NCIS: New Orleans), Alberto Ammann (Narcos), Christian Tappan (Snowfall), Diego Trujillo (Los Reyes), Paulina Dávila (Luis Miguel: The Series), Gabriel Sloyer (Power), José Zúñiga (Madam Secretary), Juliana Aidén Martinez and Martin Rodriguez make up the supporting cast.

Vergara is executive producer on the project alongside Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz, with the latter also will direct all six episodes. Ingrid Escajeda (Justified) and Narcos co-creator Doug Miro are on board as co-showrunners.

"Griselda has long been a passion project for Sofia and we are grateful that she and her partners at [Latin World Enterainment] have chosen us to help her tell that story," Newman previously said in a statement (via The Wrap).

"Sofia is a brilliant talent and her passion combined with a fantastic story from Doug and Ingrid, and the amazing Andrés Baiz at the directing helm, means we have a very exciting series to share with audiences."
