Amazon TV series 'Outer Range' filming in NM

Apr. 15—Northern New Mexico will once again be filling in for Wyoming.

Amazon Studios and Plan B Entertainment have been shooting in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Albuquerque, on the TV series, "Outer Range."

The series stars Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza and Olive Abercrombie.

New Mexico was picked to film after the series pulled out of Calgary in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

The big-budget series centers on Royal Abbott, played by Brolin, who is a rancher fighting for his land and family, as he discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming's wilderness.

According to the New Mexico Film Office, the production is employing approximately 200-300 New Mexico crew members and 2,000 New Mexico background and extras.

"'Outer Range' is a major production employing thousands of New Mexicans over several months," said Amber Dodson, New Mexico Film Office director. "We are so excited about this television series that will feature so many of New Mexico's diverse landscapes and are grateful Amazon Studios has chosen New Mexico."

With Amazon Studios and the Brad Pitt-owned Plan B Entertainment at the helm, it is reported that each episode will cost around $6 million. Usually, a production will have a spend of $1 million every eight days on a TV series.

Brolin posted an Instagram video on Jan. 9 from the Santa Fe Plaza, when production was beginning.

According to records from the New Mexico Environment Department, there was a positive COVID test and production was shut down for nearly a week, resuming on Feb. 8.

Las Vegas was a filming location for the TV series, "Longmire," which was set in Wyoming as well.

"What an honor for Las Vegas, New Mexico, to be part of the film production," said Mayor Louie A. Trujillo. "We welcome the production crews, actors and technical folks to our beautiful city. We look forward to working together closely and you can count on the City of Las Vegas for full support."
