Amateur baseball roundup: Mount Vernon surges past Plankinton

May 14—PLANKINTON — Mount Vernon took advantage of five Plankinton errors to earn a 6-3 amateur baseball win Thursday.

With the game 1-1, the Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the sixth and added another on an Eric Giblin sacrifice fly in the eight. The Bankers scored two runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI doubles by Cole Knippling and Chris Hill, but could not get any closer.

Giblin finished with two hits and two RBIs for Mount Vernon (2-1), while Koby Larson went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Deric Denning allowed two earned runs on seven hits and five walks, while striking out 11 over 7 2/3 innings. He also went 2-for-5 with an RBI at the plate.

Knippling went 2-for-4 for Plankinton (0-1), while Sheldon Gant was 3-for-3. Alex Loes also had two hits. Gant, Loes and Travis Gant allowed three earned runs on seven hits and seven walks, fanning 10.

The Mustangs host Redfield at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Bankers face South Central at 7 p.m. Sunday in Gregory.

Canova 9, Dimock-Emery 5

CANOVA — Canova scored seven consecutive runs to overcome an early deficit against Dimock-Emery Thursday.

Derek Miller went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Kendall Gassman and Jared Miller had two hits and two RBIs apiece for the Gang.

Cole Gassman, Derek Miller, Tyler Genzlinger and Justin Miller combined to allow three earned runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out 10.

Tyson Kayser had a three-run home run as part of a four-run first inning for the Raptors, who jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage. Phil Johnson scattered five earned runs on 11 hits over four innings and struck out nine. Peyton Nash had four strikeouts in two hitless innings of relief.

Canova (2-0) faces travels to Salem at 2 p.m. Sunday. Dimock-Emery (2-1) plays Larchwood, Iowa at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Alexandria 13, Menno 3

MENNO — Ethan Davis allowed one hit as Alexandria rolled past Menno Thursday.

Davis gave up one earned run and two walks, while striking out 12 in six innings of work on the mound for the Angels.

Jordan Gau had two hits and four RBIs, including a two-run blast for Alexandria (2-0), while Cole Wenande went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Jerrod Zens had an RBI and Adam Durfee went 3-for-4.

Adam Walter was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Mad Frogs. Doug Hall, Max Schoenfelder and Logan Klaudt combined to allow eight earned runs on 12 hits and six walks, while striking out eight.

Alexandria hosts Parkston at 5 p.m. on May 23.

Winner/Colome 11, Colome 0

WINNER — Pat Star was nearly hitless as Winner/Colome took down Colome Thursday in amateur baseball action.

Star went seven innings without allowing a run on one hit and one walk. He also mowed down 14 batters in the win for the Pheasants.

Austin Calhoon went 2-for-2 with three RBIs for Winner/Colome (2-0), while Chandler Bakley, Austin Richey, Oscar Pravecek and Lakin Neugebauer each drove in a run. Derek Graesser had two hits.

Jackson Kinzer, Carter Brickman, Fred Whiting and Shea Connot combined to allow six earned runs on 10 hits and seven walks, while striking out five for the Chaos.

The Pheasants travel to Platte at 7 p.m. on May 23. Colome (0-1) hosts Wessington Springs at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Platte 13, South Central 0

PLATTE — Platte allowed one hit in a season-opening shutout of South Central Thursday.

Starting pitcher Michael Buitenbos surrendered one hit and two walks over five innings and struck out four.

At the plate, Ryan Allen went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Richard Sternberg went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jarod Severson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Killer Tomatoes. Nolan Carsa also drove in two runs. Derek Soukup and Jimmy DeWaard both added two hits.

Paul Taggart and Aaron Sundquist combined to allow 12 earned runs on 16 hits and struck out for the Storm.

Platte (1-0) hosts Winner/Colome at 7 p.m. Sunday. South Central (0-2) hosts Plankinton at 7 p.m. Sunday in Gregory.
