Amateur baseball: Marshall A's knock off New London-Spicer Twins in region play

Aug. 5—MARSHALL — The Marshall A's opened Region 4C play Wednesday with a 7-3 victory over the New London-Spicer Twins.

Marshall, the fifth seed from the Corn Belt League, scored three runs in the first and three more in the second to get a big early lead.

New London-Spicer, the fourth seed from the County Line League, managed three hits off A's starter Mason Penske, who went seven innings.

Marshall advances from the play-in game to face the Bird Island Bullfrogs at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Marshall. Bird Island is the top seed from the Corn Belt.

At stake in Region 4C are two berths in the state Class C tournament. This year's tournament is Aug. 20-Sept. 4 in Waconia, Chaska and Hamburg.

Other games Saturday in Marshall include: Willmar vs. Regal at 10 a.m.; Atwater vs. the Milroy Yankees at 12:30 p.m. and Paynesville vs. Raymond at 3 p.m. Play continues in the double-elimination portion of the tournament Sunday and concludes Aug. 15.
