Alphonso Davies shines as Bayern Munich inches closer to another Bundesliga title (video)

Bayern Munich did what Bayern Munich does on Saturday, the German champions looking a lot more like their usual swashbuckling selves in the club’s second match since returning from the Bundesliga’s coronavirus hiatus in a 5-2 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt.

The performance was way more convincing than last week’s relatively pedestrian victory over Union Berlin in the (re)opener. And the star of the show was 19-year-old Alphonso Davies, who contributed a goal and an assist in the win.

Deployed in his usual spot at left back, the lightning-quick Canadian enjoyed perhaps his finest performance yet since moving to Bayern from the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS at the beginning of last year. After Leon Goretzka had given the hosts an early lead, Davies helped double the advantage by rocketing forward from his defensive position to win a loose ball.

He then sent a seeing-eye pass to teammate Thomas Muller, who beat Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp from close range:

The match appeared all but over when Robert Lewandowski — who else? — made it 3-0 less than a minute into the second half. But the visitors didn’t go away quietly.

First Eintracht’s Martin Hinteregger pulled one back for his team against the run of play in the 52nd minute. Hinteregger, a central defender, somehow added another tally before Bayern knew what had hit them. Game on. Or at least so it seemed.

Davies would restore the breathing space in short order, with a little help from Frankfurt midfielder Gelson Fernandes. Ever dangerous, Davies burst diagonally toward goal from the left touchline and attempted to play a pass across the top of the visitors’ 18-yard box. Fernandes did well to cut the ball out, but he immediately and inexplicably played it right back to Davies, who slotted past the helpless Trapp and into the bottom left corner to make it 4-2:

To their credit, Frankfurt — which hung five goals on Bayern in the first meeting between the teams this season — kept coming. Filip Kostic nearly scored when he hit the inside of Manuel Neuer’s post following a solo run, but a Hinteregger own goal had already sealed their fate with 15 minutes left.

The triumph moved Bayern back to four points clear atop the Bundesliga standings after second-place Borussia Dortmund beat Wolfsburg earlier Saturday. It puts Bayern another game closer to its eighth consecutive German title. And it was another banner day for Davies, whose emergence as one of the most exciting young players in the global game this season continues unabated.
