Alice Marie Johnson made headlines last June when Kim Kardashian stepped in and helped persuade President Trump to commute the then-inmate’s life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense. Now, the reality star and mogul is continuing to be a positive force in the 64-year-old’s life by hiring her to model Kardashian’s latest line of shapewear.
In a video posted to the SKIMS brand’s Instagram and YouTube accounts on Thursday, Johnson is seen wearing a pair of Kardashian’s newly launched solutionwear. But she also gets a chance to share her story as a part of the campaign featuring real women.
In it, Johnson talks about Kardashian taking action to free her after seeing video footage of the great-grandmother in prison.
“She went to war for me to fight for my freedom. That’s why I call her my ‘war angel,’ because nothing stood between her and my freedom,” Johnson says in the video.
Johnson was officially released on June 6, 2018 after already serving 21 years in prison. Since then, she has embraced every moment of her newfound freedom.
“Waking up in the morning and not having a bunkbed over my head is precious to me. Being able to open the door whenever I want to and just walk outside and breathe in fresh air, to breathe in freedom. That is precious to me,” Johnson says in the SKIMS ad. “This shapewear makes me feel that I can walk into the store, I can pick up something that I normally wouldn’t even think about wearing and I can put it on and it’s going to look great on me. This shapewear makes me feel free.”
Just hours after the video was posted, people have filled the comments section with well wishes for Johnson, and kind words for Kardashian for giving the formerly incarcerated woman this platform.
“You know, I really really love this. I wasn’t expecting this,” one person wrote.
Another said, “This is absolutely phenomenal! You look great, Ms. Alice.”
One commenter even wrote, “Kim literally changing lives.”
