Ireland Baldwin defends dad after 'Rust' shooting: 'I know my dad, you simply don't'

Alec Baldwin and his family are reacting after the 63-year-old actor discharged a prop gun on the set of the movie "Rust," killing a cinematographer and injuring the director.

"There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," Baldwin said in a series of tweets Friday.

Hutchins, 42, was airlifted in a helicopter after the incident to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. The director, 48-year-old Joel Souza, was transported via ambulance to Christus St. Vincent’s hospital and has since been released, according to his rep Matt DelPiano.

"I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family," Baldwin said in the tweets from an account for the Hilaria and Alec Baldwin Foundation.

"My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna," Baldwin tweeted.

His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, broke her silence in a social media post Monday.

"My heart is with Halyna. Her husband. Her son. Their family and loved ones. And my Alec," she wrote in an Instagram post. "It's said, 'there are no words,' because it's impossible to express the shock and heartache of such a tragic accident. Heartbreak. Loss. Support."

Hours after the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office led a news conference about the incident on Wednesday, Baldwin's daughter, Ireland, shared a message in support of her dad.

The Instagram photo featured a screenshot of someone who described a heartwarming work experience with the "Boss Baby" actor.

"So about a million years ago I was working in the production office in Toronto of the company that was making the Thomas the Tank Engine movie that he did. I'd dealt with typing up some pretty goofy celebrity riders in my day but NOT your dads. He only wanted to make sure he had milk and cereal in his hotel room for when his daughter was visiting. That was it, That was the whole rider. I'll always remember that," the screenshot read.

In the caption, Baldwin wrote, "Amongst some of the most abhorrent and threatening comments, emails, text messages, and voicemails I’ve been getting… this beautiful comment stands alone. I know my dad, you simply don’t. I love you, Dad."

The day after the incident, Ireland's younger brother, Stephen Baldwin shared a post on Instagram Friday "asking for your prayers tonight friends."

"Not much can be said other than please pray for all involved in the wake of this tragic accident," the post read.

"According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged," a release from the Sheriff's Office said. "Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged."

A spokesperson for Alec Baldwin told The Associated Press said there was an accident on the set involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reported Baldwin was seen Thursday outside the Sheriff’s Office in tears. USA TODAY's attempts to get comment from him have been unsuccessful.

Deputies responded to a 911 call Thursday afternoon that someone had been shot on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set of "Rust," according to the Sheriff's Office.
