Alcohol consumption and lack of lifeguards cause water safety concerns on the holiday

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division was out in full force on Monday, ensuring that Georgians enjoying their holiday on the water stay safe.

Just this weekend alone, the department made 11 boating under the influence arrests.

On Saturday, a man in his 40s drowned in Little River on Lake Lanier.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington was on the shores of Lake Lanier on Monday, asking people how they are ensuring safety for themselves and their loved ones.

Thriffena Newell, a mother of three, told Channel 2 on Monday that none of her three children knows how to swim, so she watches them closely while at the lake.

“I just try to keep them close, as close as possible,” Newell said. clarifying that she tries to keep them “within arm’s length” so that she can keep an “eye on them and keep them as close to the shoreline as possible.”

Pronetha Omowole, a Lawrenceville resident, told Channel 2 that she was taking all of the necessary precautions to keep her family safe on Monday.

“We all are making sure the kids are safe with their life jackets, and we’re also keeping an eye out on our family members,” Omowole said.

Those are the kind of precautions the Georgia department of natural resources want people to take.

Posted at the entrance to the lake is a note telling people that there is no lifeguard on duty, with a reminder to wear a life vest.
