Akron man who shot at boys playing basketball arrested after skipping sentencing

An Akron man who shot at two boys playing basketball after they yelled at him to slow down is in custody after being on the run since April.

According to court records, Tyler Duncan, 21, had been scheduled to be sentenced after pleading guilty in March to two counts of felonious assault with firearms specifications, both second-degree felonies, as well as third-degree felony charges of discharging a firearm near prohibited premises and having a weapon under disability. A warrant for his arrest was issued April 8.

On Tuesday, members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Duncan at a residence near the 1400 block of Grant Street. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Duncan initially barricaded himself in an upstairs bedroom of the residence with a firearm. The Akron Police SWAT team arrived on scene and eventually negotiated with Duncan to surrender. Three firearms were seized from the residence after the arrest.

On Oct. 11, 2020, Duncan shot at two boys who were playing basketball at a park near the 1400 block of Rockaway Street in Akron. Police said one of the boys, 15, told officers they had yelled at Duncan because he was speeding down the street.
