New airline startup arrives in Medford

May 11—A new airline has touched down in Southern Oregon offering discount fares on flights to Southern California.

Avelo Airlines is offering direct flights between Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport and Hollywood Burbank Airport — formerly known as Bob Hope Airport, according to a press release issued by the Medford airport.

The airline was to be welcomed Tuesday evening with a traditional water arch and speeches from Medford airport Director Jerry Brienza, Medford Mayor Randy Sparancino, Jackson County Commissioner Dave Dotterrer and airline executives.

Effective this week, the airline will fly a 189-seat Boeing 737-800 between Medford and Southern California on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, according to an earlier Mail Tribune report. According to the airline's website, one-way fares start between $19 and $24 per passenger.

The airline made its inaugural flight April 28 from Hollywood Burbank to Charles M. Schultz-Sonoma County Airport, according to a news release from the airline, and by late May the airline will connect Burbank to 10 regional airports, including Eugene, Phoenix-Mesa, Arizona, and Bozeman Yellowstone, Montana.
