AFD responds to fire at a scrapyard near North Heights
Amarillo Fire Department was called out to N. Lamar Street right off the 2300 block of Amarillo Blvd in response to reports of a fire at a scrapyard near the railroad tracks and ongoing construction in the area at 5:06 p.m. Saturday.
Four fire trucks responded to the one-alarm fire promptly, resulting in minimal property damage. The fire was contained to a small area of the property with scrap metal, discarded appliances and cars laid all about the premises. Some of the fire damage extended to an area outside of the property close to the railroad tracks that travel underneath Amarillo Boulevard.
District Chief Jerome Drerup stated that the fire, in his approximation, only affected about 25 to 50 feet of property damage and said that at this point, the cause of the fire remains to be determined and the fire was completely contained.
