Actress pens powerful message about battle with PTSD: '6 years ago, I tried to take my own life'

Thursday, October 10 is World Mental Health Day, a day intended to raise awareness about different mental illnesses, mental health and finding ways to end the stigma that surrounds the subject matter.

Social media has historically served as a great way for those with platforms to speak out about trending and important issues, often tied to a dedicated day or hashtag.

Many celebrities took it to Twitter to tell their own stories of mental health struggles or triumphs and to offer words of solace to those going through tough and trying times:

Among these was 'The Good Place' actress and activist Jameela Jamil who penned an incredibly powerful and moving message about her battle with PTSD.

"This month, 6 years ago, I tried to take my own life," Jamil tweeted. "I’m so lucky that I survived, and went on to use EMDR to treat my severe PTSD."

She continued: "I urge you to hang on just a bit longer and ask for help if you need it. Because things can turn around. I promise."

Jamil, who champions mental health-related causes such as Instagram ad and sponsored post regulations and body positivity, has historically been very vocal across her social media platforms about various social justice issues and intersectional feminism.

She followed up with a second tweet in honor of the day:

"There is so much work to do in Improving awareness and mental health care, and we need to further de-stigmatize the conversation around asking for help," Jamil began.

"While you’re gathering the strength, I recommend the work of @matthaig1 @Ayishat_Akanbi and @scarcurtis. ALL my love to you."
