Abilene Wylie, Abilene High post victories, set up showdown for 4-5A tennis title

LUBBOCK – No. 1-ranked Wylie didn’t drop a set in sweeping Lubbock Monterey 19-0 in a District 4-5A tennis match Saturday.

Wylie (21-1 overall, 5-0 district) clinched at least a share of the district title with the victory. The Bulldogs wrap up district against Abilene High at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Wylie.

“Played pretty well today,” Wylie coach Mark Hathorn said. “Didn’t lose a set. That’s tough to do against a good team. Proud of this team’s attitude and effort. I feel like we are getting better but have to get ready for Abilene High Tuesday and then start the playoff the next week.”

AHS corrals Mustangs

At Lubbock, Abilene High beat Lubbock Coronado 15-4 in a District 4-5A match.

The Eagles (18-4, 4-1), who have clinched a playoff berth, can still get a share of the district title with a win at Wylie in the regular-season finale on Tuesday.

“We were up 5-2 after doubles, so we were glad to be ahead and not have to play from behind,” AHS coach Stacy Bryan said. “After such an emotional thriller last Tuesday, we did not want to fall into the trap of being complacent. So, I was proud that the kids did not let down.”

Griffin Sullivan, Ben Neie and Luke Padon each rallied from first-set losses to win at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 singles.

“So, the kids never gave up and played hard,” Bryan said.
