No matter what exercise you're doing, you need a solid foundation. When you're cross-training, you want a shoe that can carry you through a bootcamp class and absorb the ground when you're doing plyometric exercises. These next-gen kicks fuse the best features of multiple (once very separate) worlds, and they're here to power you through any workout.

Your workout is only as good as the shoes on your feet. That’s especially true when it comes to cross-training, which calls for all kinds of movement—front-to-back, side-to-side, up and down, you name it.

So, if you’re going to go all in on a HIIT or bootcamp workout, you need a shoe that can handle everything from box jumps and cardio machines to weight-lifting in any number of environments. But how do you find a shoe versatile enough to do all of this?

Look for a shoe with a few specific features. "Cross-training shoes should have sufficient traction and be able to grip the floor; they should not slip and slide on different surfaces," says Mali Pelham, CPT, CFSC, personal trainer at Wattage in Chicago.

Not only will the right shoes enhance your performance, but a secure and comfortable fit can help you prevent injury, too. Ready to sweat? These are the best cross-training shoes you can buy right now tested by reviewers, editors, and experts.

HIIT Training Shoe

Made for explosive movement, these sneakers were designed with stability, grip, and durability in mind. They offer targeted support and a secure fit that will get you through all your jumps. Be aware that Reebok's sizes run big, so you might want to size down.

"This is a stable shoe for being on your feet and participating in various modes of fitness," says Melissa Kendter, CPT. "They provide a lot of stability from heavy lifting to more explosive and dynamic movements. Not to mention they have great traction for minimal slippage."

Rave Review: "These shoes are the perfect shoe for HIIT workouts. The shoes grip the floor and have a very comfortable base when doing squats."

Influence Training Shoes

This shoe shines in studio workouts. You’ve got "Flex-Foil" layers that support lateral movement, midsole cushioning that targets pressure points for extra comfort, and an ergonomic design specifically made for women’s feet. What more could you want in a cross-trainer?

Testers love how versatile this shoe is. While some use it for aerobics, others use it for kickboxing. Many reviewers also love that it provides a firm grip and comfortability, while still being on the budget-friendly front.

Rave Review: "The MINUTE I put them on and walked around, I felt like my feet were sighing with relief and saying 'finally'...They are lightweight, yet support your feet so well and have padding in all the right places."

Women's Floral Trainer

Pelham says the NOBULL brand is super popular. These NOBULL shoes were specifically designed for cross-training and are on the stiffer side due to intentional guard plates that create a 360-degree shield around your foot.

"These are great indoor and outdoor versatile training shoes! The No Bull trainers are an excellent buy and go-to for cross-training, weight-lifting, and workouts alike," Kendter says. "They are built with a supportive structure and a slightly wider toe box for added stability." The shoes are also designed with grounding for better lifts and an overall lower stack height, which means you are closer to the ground, allowing you to have better movement and a more natural balance, Kendter says.

P.S. They're so stylish you'll hardly believe they're gym shoes.

Rave Review: "This is my second pair of trainers and they make such a difference when lifting. I use mine for CrossFit workouts. It is a very functional shoe. I not only wear them to workout in, but also to work."

Bondi 8 Max Cushioned

Before WH editorial assistant Addison Aloian bought a pair of flatter shoes, she used these Hoka Bondi 8's to lift and run, and she says they were awesome. While they're made to run miles, they also offer a plush cushion and a rear crash pad, making them perfect for high-impact workouts at the gym.

Testers who have flat feet find comfort with the Bondi 8's. Many reviewers who run on the road also say that it's great for absorbing the high-impact that comes from concrete. Not to mention, avid runners say it's the perfect shoe for high-mileage training.

Rave Review: "Great support for the arthritis in my feet. Loved them so much I bought the leather option for a more formal work look."

Nano X3 Adventure

If you can't already tell, the WH team loves a good pair of Reeboks when it comes to cross-training, and Amanda Lucci, deputy editor of content and strategy, says these specifically are her recent favorites. Unlike the OG Nano X2's, these are totally water-resistant, so they're made for everything from outdoor workouts to gym sessions. Their Vibram soles also provide a nice grip on wet grass or rocky terrain.

Testers love how this shoe performs during indoor and outdoor workouts. Reviewers especially like that it provides security for HIIT movement. Testers also advise that this shoe runs large, so sizing down might be your best bet.

Editor Review: "These shoes are designed for outdoor workouts, but I basically wear them for life," says Lucci. "They are sturdy and comfortable for any sort of training, no matter my locale—perfect if you only want to pack one sneaker when you travel."

Minimus TR V1 Cross Trainer

These cross-trainers from New Balance are made with mesh fabric for increased ventilation and cushy foam for a customized fit. They're also designed with premium liners that allow you to go sock-free if you want to.

Testers love how much room this shoe provides. Many of them use the Minimus TR V1 Cross Trainer's for activities such as CrossFit, Zumba, weight-lifting, and running. Some reviewers even wear them to work if they need to spend long hours on their feet.

Rave Review: "I do American Ninja Warrior workouts in these and their grip is amazing! Plus, the toe area isn’t overly roomy, which I love as well."

Adrenaline GTS 22

You can log miles and cross-train in the latest iteration of the Brooks Adrenaline shoes. Their lightweight design allows you to move freely as they cushion your every step. They also include "GuideRails tech," which helps limit excess foot movement that can harm your knees.

"These are super comfortable, supportive, and versatile for everyday life, traditional workouts, walks, and jogging. This shoe provides ample cushioning and the proper support for your gait if you have had any injuries to your feet or knees," Kendter says.

Rave Review: "These shoes provide the best support for me. My feet overpronate when I walk, which causes shin splints and other feet issues. I have had many injuries to my feet in the past due to wearing shoes that did not provide the proper support for my gait. Brooks Adrenaline GTS's are the only sneakers that are not only comfortable to wear, but provide support for my achy feet."

Free Metcon 5

Let's be honest, the style of your sneakers can totally give you a boost of confidence. With these Nike's, you'll be able to enjoy the modern design while benefiting from all qualities that make the shoe so unique. These shoes, which are available in five other colors, were created to help you crush your cardio workouts and enhance agility. Trainers love them, too.

"This is perfect for my HIIT-style training workouts," says Ashley Barnett, CPT. The grip, flexibility of the shoes, and lightness make it a great running shoe for shorter distances. It has good support and offers great cushion for jumping, strength, or mixed workouts." Barnett says she uses them for almost all workouts beside spin.

Rave Review: "I have tried many shoes over the years and this is by far the best I've worn. I like them so much. They actually motivate me to exercise everyday so I can wear them. I already bought a second pair just so I have them ready to go when I wear out the first pair."

Solstice XT 2

Calling all runners who love a good speed workout! A supportive shoe like these Altra's are sure to help you go fast and stay light on your feet. While these are considered road running shoes, it's important to note that they might not be the best for long-distance running due to the lack of extra cushioning. Still, they could be a great investment for runners who do the occasional track workout.

"This is a great selection because it is anatomically foot-shaped, which gives your feet more space to sit naturally, and your toes space to provide proper balance and support," Kendter says. "They are made with a lower stack height, which provides grounding for better lifts, better movement, and more natural balance."

Rave Review: "I have been using Altra for a few years now. I have flat feet and had fusion surgery on both my big toes. Altra is all I use. They last long and have the support I need, as well as a natural toe box. I love them!"

"They're made for strength training, but they're flexible enough for rowing workouts, and so soft and comfortable on the interior that I can get away with no socks, which I love," says Women's Health fitness editor Jennifer Nied.

Rave Review: "I've been looking for shoes that are cute, but also wearable to different activities for a very long time. I've been wearing these for CrossFit, weight-lifting, hiking, and long walks. So far, they have not disappointed me in any of my activities. I will be buying a second pair soon."

How to shop for cross-training shoes

Pelham recommends keeping three things in mind when you're on the hunt for a new pair of cross-trainers:

  • Try before you buy: Trying your shoes on before buying them is an absolute must. But if you aren't able to find something in-store, Pelham recommends buying online from a retailer with a decent return policy just in case it takes a couple of tries to find the perfect fit.

  • Comfort: When it's time to find the right shoe for any occasion, it all boils down to comfort. "Your feet and your toes shouldn't feel like they're being suffocated, and you shouldn't be counting down the minutes until you get to take them off," says Pelham.

  • Style: Don't sleep on the chance to make a fashion statement during your workout. "You need to like the shoes you wear and feel confident while wearing them," Pelham adds.

What is different about a cross-trainer and a running shoe?

Cross-training shoes are designed to provide more stability, traction and support on different surfaces and when moving in different directions than running shoes. Running shoes, on the other hand, tend to be lighter, more flexible, and less durable than cross-training shoes.

Is it okay to walk or run in cross-training shoes?

You can totes walk in cross-training shoes, and sprinting shorter distances is fair game, too. However, running in cross training shoes is not recommended, as they don't have as much support and cushioning as a long-distance running shoe. They often feel stiff and hard rather than plush.
