79-year-old women dies in single-vehicle crash west of Sand Lake in Brown County

One person died in a one-vehicle crash Thursday eveningin Brown County, according to a news release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The 79-year-old woman was a passenger in a 2019 Dodge Caravan. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people also in the vehicle were injured, though names aren't being released pending the notification of family members.

The wreck was at 6:36 p.m. at the intersection of state Highway 10 and County Road 14 about 19 miles north of Aberdeen. That's just west of the Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

The driver, a 69-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries that are not life-threatening, according to the release. A 65-year-old female passenger also suffered serious injuries that are not life-threatening. Another passenger, a 69-year-old woman, suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Caravan "was northbound on Brown County 14 when it did not stop at the stop sign at the intersection of South Dakota Highway 10. The vehicle hit a dip and the driver lost control. The vehicle went into the east ditch and hit a tree," according to preliminary crash information released by the state.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and has determined that all four women were wearing seat belts.
