I-75 Modernization project continues: What's opening, closing this weekend

More orange barrels are hitting Interstate 75 this weekend, much to Oakland County residents' dismay.

Constructions crews are closing two ramps, reopening two others and cutting off traffic to eastbound and westbound Interstate 696. These closures and reopenings are part of the third segment of the highway's revamping project, stretching from 8 Mile Road to north of 13 Mile Road.

Here's what's opening and closing Friday 10 p.m.:

  • Closing — Southbound I-75 exit ramp to 11 Mile Road, and the 11 Mile Road entrance ramp to southbound I-75. The service drive will also close north of Gardenic Avenue to Interstate 696 to allow for the City of Royal Oak to install a new water main. The closures will remain until September 2023.

  • Closing — Southbound I-75 exit to east and west bound I-696. This closure, slotted to reopen 5 a.m. Monday, is for construction to the retaining wall. On Monday, traffic on the two-lane ramp will be limited to one lane and the single-lane closure will remain until late February 2023. Eastbound and westbound I-696 will remain accessible during the closure. The right lane of southbound I-75 will be closed from Lincoln Avenue to I-696.

  • Opening — Both directions of 12 Mile Road under I-75. Ramps onto and off of southbound I-75 at 12 Mile Road will also reopen. Meanwhile, the northbound ramps are expected to reopen in mid-November. 12 Mile Road will be closed again under the highway and its southbound ramps in February 2023 to allow for the building of the southbound I-75 bridge over 12 Mile Road.
