70-year-old man dies in York fire involving multiple homes

A 70-year-old man died in a row house fire Friday night in York, according to the York County Coroner's Office.

He was identified late Saturday as Anthony Brown.

The three-alarm fire was reported around 10 p.m. in the 300 block of Roosevelt Avenue and involved five homes, according to the York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services.

In a Facebook post, Chief William Sleeger Jr. reported the following:

Crews were dispatched to 306 Roosevelt Ave. They found "heavy fire showing from the third floor of 304 and 306, the rear of both houses being well involved."

Bystanders alerted them to a person trapped on the second floor of 306. Despite "an aggressive interior attack and search, a male resident was found deceased on the second floor in the home by fire department personnel," Sleeger reported.

The fire extended to 302, 304, 306, 308 and 310 Roosevelt Ave. and went to three alarms with assistance from several departments. The loss is estimated at over $275,000. The Red Cross is assisting those displaced.

The investigation is being conducted by the City of York Department of Fire/Rescue Services, York City Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Police. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
