7-year-old girl drowns in a pool rented out for a party at a Teaneck home

A 7-year-old girl drowned in a private swimming pool believed to have been rented out for a party in Teaneck on Sunday, police said, adding to a string of drownings in the area over the past few months.

Police were called about a missing girl a little after 6 p.m. and found her at the bottom of an inground pool at a home on Westervelt Place, Teaneck Police Chief Glenn M. O'Reilly said in an email sent Sunday night.

The chief said CPR was begun and the girl was taken to Holy Name hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m.

"We extend our sincerest condolences to her family & friends during this most trying time," O'Reilly said in the email.

In a subsequent email, O'Reilly said it appeared the pool had been rented out for a party, and that the matter was under investigation.

A listing for an inground pool in the area of Westervelt Place is available on Swimply, an Airbnb-like site for private pool rentals. Police did not immediately confirm whether the listing was the same pool where the incident occurred, but the name of the host matched the name of the homeowner found through a records search.

A person who answered the phone linked to the Westervelt Place address said the homeowners were not speaking to reporters. A message left for Swimply was not immediately returned.

Several questions remain in the unidentified girl's drowning, including what safety precautions or supervision may have been in place.

This isn't the first drowning to happen in North Jersey recently. On June 17, a 55-year-old man was found dead in a River Vale private pool, police said. Three days before that, two men drowned in Sunset Lake at Mine Hill Beach in Morris County.

And in May, a 15-year-old Eastside High School student drowned in the Great Notch Reservoir in Woodland Park, one month after an 18-year-old man drowned in Hardcastle Pond in New Milford.
