7 Berks players qualify for District 3 Boys Tennis Singles Tournament

May 5—Seven Berks County players have qualified for the District 3 Boys Tennis Singles Tournament that starts Friday at Hershey Racquet Club and RCW, Lancaster.

Berks champion Zach Schrader of Reading High is in the 16-player Class 3A field along with Wilson's Veraj Patel and Exeter's Teddy Snyder.

In the 16-player Class 2A field are Berks runner-up Sam Robertson of Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser's Fox Bryan, Berks Catholic's Michael Schuetz and Antietam's Aiden Freese.

Schrader, a freshman and the first Reading High player to win the Berks singles championship since Warren Haas in 1951, opens against Chase Wilson of Ephrata. That match is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. at Hershey Racquet Club.

If Schrader wins that match, his likely quarterfinal opponent would be top-seeded Andreas Wingert of Hershey, the 2019 District 3 Class 3A bronze medalist.

Patel opens against No. 4 seed Curtis Rabatin of Penn Manor while Snyder faces No. 2 seed Sammy Schwab of Central Dauphin.

Andy Chen of Hershey is the No. 3 seed.

The quarterfinals follow the first round. The semifinals and final are scheduled for Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.

In the Class 2A first-round matches Friday at noon at RCW, Bryan will face Schuetz, Robertson will take on Jeff Hallock of Bishop McDevitt, and Freese will play third-seeded Josh Pantaloni of Camp Hill.

Nick Abadir of Lancaster Country Day is seeded first, Brady Burns of Pequea Valley is seeded second and Adam Warren of Trinity is seeded fourth.

The quarterfinals follow the first round. The semifinals, championship and third-place matches will be played Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.

The top three finishers in both classes advance to the PIAA Tournament.

The District 3 Doubles Tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 14-15.
