Be ready to lace up your shoes and grab your water bottles for the 64th annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk, scheduled for Sept. 5.

The walk was first held in 1958 and usually attracts 20,000-30,000 participants each year, according to a Mackinac Bridge Authority news release.

This year’s event will begin at 6:30 a.m. and participants can start walking from either the St. Ignace or Mackinaw City ends of the bridge.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer led last year's walk, which drew 21,000 people.

Walkers have three options for routes: walking to the midpoint of the bridge and turning back, crossing the bridge and exiting from the opposite side, or crossing the bridging and walking back to exit from their origin point.

The route options are depicted in a video on the bridge authority website.

The bridge will be closed to public vehicles from 6:30 a.m. to noon for this event. There will be no buses transporting participants across the bridge.
