50-year-old stops to buy soda at QuikTrip — and leaves with winning Iowa lottery ticket

After washing his van, a 50-year-old man who owns a painting business stopped at a QuikTrip convenience store to buy a soda and an Iowa lottery ticket.

That ticket was a big winner, according to a news release from the Iowa Lottery. And Brad Carter could not believe how much he won.

Carter, of Des Moines, won a Super 7s Progressive InstaPlay prize of $443,507, officials said.

This is his second big win in about a year, according to the release. He won a $28,840 jackpot in January 2022.

“I’m just shocked as much as anything,” Carter told lottery officials when claiming his prize. “I double-checked it, double-checked it and double-checked it. It’s a pretty good feeling, I can tell you that.”

The first thing Carter said he did after winning was call his wife, Angel, but he struggled to get out words.

“I’m pretty emotional, I can’t talk and stuff, so she didn’t know what was going on until I calmed down a little bit and told her,” he recalled in the release.

Still not sure if he could believe his eyes, the husband said he had his wife, kids and in-laws double check the Super 7s Progressive ticket.

“Until someone confirms it, you’re just in shock,” he told lottery officials.

He said he’s not sure how he and his wife will spend the winnings, but they would love a bigger kitchen. They’re debating renovating the kitchen in their current home or buying a new house.
