Sonny Cumbie will be introduced as the next football coach of Louisiana Tech on Wednesday.

Cumbie, 40, replaces Skip Holtz, who was 64-50 in eight seasons with the Bulldogs, including a 6-1 bowl record.

Here are five things to know about the new coach.

Former Texas Tech offensive coordinator

Cumbie spent this season as the Texas Tech offensive coordinator and was the interim coach the last four games going 1-3.

The Red Raiders tied for 53rd in points per game with 30 and ranked 62nd in yards per game with 408.3.

Former Texas Tech quarterback

A former walk-on quarterback for Mike Leach at Texas Tech, he threw for 4,742 yards and 32 touchdowns with 18 interceptions.

Cumbie led Texas Tech to a 2004 Holiday Bowl win over No. 4 Cal and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, now with the Green Bay Packers. He threw for 520 yards and was named the game's MVP and still holds the school record for most passing yards.

Cumbie also backed up Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury during his time with the Red Raiders.

Former arena football player

Cumbie was on the rosters of the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens but did not play in an NFL game.

Cumbie played for the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League where he won Rookie of the Year and in two seasons threw for more than 7,700 yards and 142 touchdowns.

After the AFL disbanded, Cumbie became the coach and director of player personnel for the San Angelo Stampede of the Indoor Football League. He even inserted himself as starting quarterback as any good coach would do.

Assistant coach under high profile coaches

In 2009 he became a graduate assistant under Leach at Texas Tech. He oversaw the defensive scout team and coached the quarterbacks for two seasons. He continued as member of Tommy Tuberville's staff as the inside receiver coach, replacing newly named USC coach Lincoln Riley. Under Kingsbury he was co-offensive coordinator for the 2013 season.

He was hired by TCU as the offensive coordinator to help transition the Horned Frogs to Leach's Air Raid system. He was part of Gary Patterson's staff from 2014-20.

Former radio announcer

From 2005-08, Cumbie was the analyst for Texas Tech football games on the school's radio network.

He was brought in to provide in-depth knowledge on the Leach era and the quarterback position according to the 2008 Texas Tech media guide.
