Asian shares mostly rose Wednesday after the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 30,000 points for the first time despite an ongoing pandemic, as progress in development of coronavirus vaccines kept investors in a buying mood. Jingyi Pan, senior market strategist at IG in Singapore, noted news that the transition of power in the U.S. to President-elect Joe Biden will finally begin, as well as his selection of former Fed chair Janet Yellen as treasury secretary, were encouraging traders. “While the vaccine optimism had changed the outlook for Asia markets hoping for a quicker recovery, the formal transition for the Biden administration alongside former Fed chair Janet Yellen’s expected lead of the U.S. Treasury had only served as embellishments contributing to expectations for a more conducive environment for the recovery,” Pan said.

(Bloomberg) -- A rally in global equities cooled Wednesday as investors balanced optimism spurred by vaccine and political developments against a challenging economic outlook amid the pandemic. The dollar steadied.A gauge of Asia-Pacific shares gave up an earlier climb of about 1%. South Korean and Chinese stocks turned lower, while those in Japan posted modest gains. U.S. and European futures ticked higher. The S&P 500 index earlier closed at a record and the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 30,000. Treasury yields dipped, oil held above $45 a barrel and copper touched the highest since 2014.Positive vaccine news as well as the formal start of President-elect Joe Biden’s transition to power -- including the selection of Janet Yellen as Treasury secretary -- have fueled optimism about the outlook. At the same time, restrictions to curb surging coronavirus infections threaten to impede the global economic recovery. The MSCI gauge of global shares remains up about 13% in November, set for the best month since it began in 1988.Next up Wednesday comes a slew of U.S. economic indicators, from jobless claims to readings on consumer confidence and personal income. Minutes of the most recent Federal Open Market Committee meeting are also due.“Now, there’s big event risk up ahead: FOMC minutes,” said Ilya Spivak, head Asia-Pacific strategist at DailyFX. “So markets don’t seem keen on follow-through. The worry is that the Fed will continue to signal that they’re keeping to a hands-off posture. No tightening, but no new easing either.”Elsewhere, Bitcoin retreated after topping $19,000. From fast food to fine dining, some restaurants in Britain are relying on home kits to keep them afloat during lockdown, turning clients into cooks who recreate favourite meals in the comfort of their own kitchens. For James Knappett, chef-owner of Michelin-starred London restaurant Kitchen Table, the decision to deliver do-it-yourself (DIY) meal kits wasn't easy, but it was essential. The venue has been closed since the first lockdown in March, because seating is around a kitchen table so social distancing is not possible.
Eight months after women's college basketball was stopped because of the coronavirus, the sport is back, with the new season tipping off Wednesday. This year, getting to the Final Four, which is slated to be played in San Antonio, might not be purely about having the most talented team. Flexibility, fluidity and adaptability are three words that every coach in the country has adopted this year as team mantras.

India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party has approved legislation in the country’s most populous state that lays out a prison term of up to 10 years for anyone found guilty of using marriage to force someone to change religion. The decree for the state of Uttar Pradesh was passed Tuesday and follows a campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party against interfaith marriages. The party describes such marriages as “love jihad,” an unproven conspiracy theory used by its leaders and Hindu hard-line groups to accuse Muslim men of converting Hindu women by marriage.

Just like that, the Atlanta Hawks transformed themselves into a playoff contender. A team that averaged less than 25 wins the last three seasons added to its impressive young core with a whirlwind of free-agent signings, capped by the news late Tuesday that Sacramento would not match a four-year, $72 million offer sheet to Bogdan Bogdanovic. “It's go time,” tweeted Hawks All-Star guard Trae Young, clearly excited by the bulked-up supporting case he'll have around him in 2021.
