49ers LT Trent Williams ‘most likely’ has high ankle sprain

Trent Williams is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain during the 49ers’ dismal Week 3 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Williams left the game in the third quarter on a play where Jimmy Garoppolo gave up a key safety by stepping out of the back of the endzone. The left tackle got rolled up from behind and limped off the field.

In his post-game press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Williams “most likely” sustained a high ankle sprain.

Williams battled through a similar injury during the NFC Championship Game loss to the Rams last season. At this early stage in the season, it would appear likely the All-Pro will miss some time.

Shanahan also said linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair had most likely suffered an MCL injury. Al-Shaair left the game in the second half and did not return.

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles stepped in for Al-Shaair and will be expected to get the strongside linebacker snaps on base downs in Al-Shaair’s likely absence.
