The 49ers will be without their top cornerback for at least a couple weeks, and perhaps the rest of the preseason. Head coach Kyle Shanahan in an interview on KNBR in San Francisco said CB Charvarius Ward is out for a couple weeks with a muscle strain.

This is the second starting CB that’s gone down for the 49ers. The good news is neither Ward nor CB Emmanuel Moseley have serious ailments.

It wouldn’t be a surprise though if neither player suits up until preparations for the regular season begin. San Francisco has a handful of CBs who need some experience so getting additional practice and game reps could ultimately benefit the players down the depth chart while ensuring Ward and Moseley are both fully healthy for the regular season.

The 49ers have their preseason opener Friday at home vs. Green Bay before going on the road for joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings and a preseason Week 2 matchup against them. They’ll travel to Houston just five days later for the exhibition finale.

A two-week timeline puts Ward on track to return a day before the Texans game, so it seems highly unlikely he won’t make his 49ers debut until Sept. 11 in the regular season opener vs. the Bears.
