4-year-old girl in Cecil County dies after being pinned by farm equipment

Jul. 30—Maryland State Police are investigating the Wednesday death of a 4-year-old who was pinned by farm equipment in Cecil County.

Spokesperson for MSP Greg Shipley said troopers were requested to go to a farm on the 700 block of Barnes Corner Road in Rising Sun by the Cecil County Emergency Operations Center where medics were treating a 4-year-old girl. While troopers were en route, they were informed that the girl had died.

Initial investigation suggests that the girl was found "pinned under a hay bale spike for a skid steer or tractor that is used to move large hay bales," in a barn on the property. The girl lived at the address.

While preliminary investigation indicates her death was accidental, MSP is investigating what caused the equipment to fall on her and how the death occurred, Shipley said.

The girl's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, the results of which are pending.

Shipley declined to answer specific questions about the incident.
