4-acre brush fire in Maili probably caused by fireworks
Jul. 5—A brush fire that threatened homes in Maili tonight has been brought under control by the Honolulu Fire Department.
The 4-acre fire was probably caused by fireworks, fire Capt. Malcolm Medrano said.
Crews responded to the fire near Mokila Street in Maili at around 7 :30 p.m. with 12 units manned with 46 personnel.
"Even though the wind direction shifted a few times changing the direction of the fire, the aggressive offensive fire attack approach contained the fire at 9 :24 p.m., " Medrano said.
Firefighters remained at scene to "mop up " and put out smoldering hot spots, he said.
Another probable fireworks-related brush fire was started on Helelua Street in Nanakuli at about 8 :26 p.m. Two fire units responded at 8 :33 p.m. to find grass, brush, and trees burning in a 25-square foot area. The fire was extinguished at 9 :13 p.m., Medrano said.
In addition, firefighters contained two small grass fires near the 91-1000 block of Kapapahui Street in Ewa Beach at 8 :44 p.m. One unit, staffed with four personnel, arrived at the scene at 8 :58 p.m. to find the fires near the docks along the shoreline.
Both fires were contained at 9 :33 p.m. The cause of the fires were undetermined, he said.
