$34.4M revamp underway at Marine City High School

About $34.4 million of work is beginning at Marine City High School.

The East China Board of Education got an update on the district's use of bond funds during a meeting Monday, as well as signed off a slew of projects at the high school.

The funding comes from the $112.9 million bond approved by voters in March 2020.

Kyle Vreeland, project manager from TMP Architects, said classes will not be disturbed during renovations and some are already underway. The work is expected to be completed around fall of 2024.

East China School District has invested approximately 50% of the bond funds so far. That includes the completion of work at the stadium, the 10 classrooms of the Innovation Center, Early Childhood center, Marine City tennis courts, along with the projects under construction which include the new St. Clair gym and the Marine City High School.

At Monday's board meeting, the board approved $374,192 for another phase of replacing the high school's roof. The total roof repair cost is about $1.1 million.

The Marine City High School project will consist of light and heavy renovations, according to Vreeland. Light renovations include installing new lights, placing new furniture and installing new technology in the building.

Heavy renovations are things such as room expansions, which involve wall demolition and repair.

Other highlights of the Marine City High Schools renovations include repairing sidewalks, creating a new main entrance, placing new signage at the main entrance and expanding the media center.

The project will be completed in sections. Changes taking place during the school year will be done slowly, and temporary walls will be placed as to not disrupt the students.

“There’s so much work that get done during the summer,” Vreeland said. “We’ll be able to work in different areas that won’t affect the day-to-day stuff of students and teachers.”

Already, TMP Architects have started renovations on parts of the high school’s interior. Current renovations include revamping some classrooms, the main office and counseling center.

Superintendent Suzanne Cybulla said the district is excited to finally get started on the construction for the Marine City High School project. She said the project has about 10 phases on its own.

“We are looking forward to providing new, exciting and innovative learning spaces for our students,” she said.

Unless specified otherwise, all East China school board meetings will now take place in the conference room of the innovation center, located at 1585 Meisner Road. The next meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 27.
