30th and Colorado in Boulder partially reopens following construction

Sep. 27—The intersection at 30th Street and Colorado Avenue in Boulder has partially reopened to traffic while the $16 million construction project continues.

The area was closed to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic for about two weeks as construction crews elevated the intersection and completed two bike and pedestrian underpasses, which wasn't possible with live traffic, according to earlier Camera reporting.

Although the intersection has now partially reopened, there will be lane shifts and left turns are restricted while construction continues, city spokesperson Aisha Ozaslan confirmed.

The project, which began in March 2021, was designed to improve connections to existing sidewalks, bike lanes and multi-use paths in addition to creating the two underpasses. It was initially supposed to conclude this year. However, delays due to relocating utilities and a ditch have pushed the anticipated finishing date to 2023.

Because it separates turning bicycles and cars and features "corner refuge islands" to slow turning vehicles and improve safety to pedestrians and cyclists, it is considered the first "fully protected" intersection in Boulder. It's also considered one of the busiest intersections in the city, as it connects the University of Colorado Boulder's main and east campuses.
