What is buy now, pay later?

Buy now, pay later allows you to space out your payments to help you budget while holiday shopping.

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is a payment option that's become quite popular in 2021, with platforms like Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna popping up at retailers all across the country. Some retailers, like HSN and QVC, have their own in-house flexible payment options. Time reports that, since the pandemic, 45% of Americans say they've used a BNPL program at least once a month.

Rather than paying for your entire purchase in one payment, you can space out your payments over a specific number of terms, typically aligned with paycheck cycles. This allows you to buy more without spending more upfront. Even better? Most BNPL programs are interest-free, making them more attractive than putting large purchases on a credit card.
