3 dead, 11 rescued after flash floods in Nogales, Sonora
Two girls and one woman died and 11 others were rescued Saturday during flash floods in Nogales, Sonora, according to the city's Department of Civil Protection.
The two girls, aged 6 and 8, died after being swept away by the flood water while in a taxi with their mother on Avenida Tecnológico, authorities said. The mother was able to get out of the car but could not save her daughters because of the intense strength of the water, the Department of Civil Protection said in a Facebook post.

On the same street, a 56-year-old woman died after she was trapped inside her Chevrolet Trailblazer that was swept away by the current, according to authorities.
Eleven other people were rescued after 12 vehicles were swept away by the current in different parts of the city, authorities said. The flash floods were caused by the heavy rain that deluged Nogales, Sonora, over the weekend.
Flooding deaths in the cross-border community are nothing new.
Videos circulating on Twitter Saturday showed the lethal, brown water fervently rushing through the streets of the city as it toppled cars and reached the floors of concrete bridges.

On Aug. 9, during similar flash floods, public safety personnel in Nogales, Arizona, looked over the Nogales Wash from bridges above after receiving a report that someone may have washed over from Mexico.
In the past, monsoon floods have been known to wash bodies across the border from Mexico into Arizona.
