The 24 Best Bodysuits for Every Style and Occasion

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission.

If there’s a singular wardrobe staple that does all the heavy lifting, it’s the bodysuit. It can serve as lingerie, a base layer or a statement top all on its own. But, despite its potential, the piece can be polarizing, with some trendsetters swearing by it for ease and convenience and a whole other subset finding the task of pulling one on cumbersome and constraining. If you fall into the latter category, it may be time to reconsider, as the best bodysuits on the market today tackle shortcomings thanks to innovative designs and new materials.

More from WWD

“Bodysuits create the perfect foundation, hugging your curves and creating a smooth effortless look,” Liisa Thorson, national fit director at Nordstrom, tells WWD. “They’re great for layering, as you don’t have bulky fabric to worry about.”

“Plus, they’re two for one,” says Jacqueline Zenere, a celebrity stylist who dresses Olivia Palermo and Ashley Benson. “Skip the underwear if you dare.”

What Is a Bodysuit?

The modern bodysuit was originated by Jules Léotard as a fitted garment to wear during his trapeze performances. It then became a staple among dancers and was popularized for everyday wear in the ’40s by Mildred Orrick and Claire McCardell. The bodysuit has kept its sporty beginnings, as a uniform of athletes — dancers and gymnasts, particularly — and those in the ‘80s that found themselves working out with Jane Fonda.  But now, the bodysuit has also taken a subversive turn, thanks to brands like Nensi Dojaka and Mugler sending cutout, sheer takes down the runways these last few seasons. It’s also become a popular style on stage among performers like Beyoncé and Shakira, who prefer sparkly iterations. But, don’t underestimate the bodysuit in its original minimal, body-hugging form. “They’re great companions to hero garments,” Zenere says. “A strong coat doesn’t need competition, so a simple bodysuit is great to throw underneath to let the outerwear shine.” You can still look to luxury houses like Fendi or Bottega Veneta for classic styles, but there are also a number of contemporary labels that specialize in basics to have on your radar.

Bodysuit Trends for 2022

In 2022, there are a few notable ways to consider wearing a bodysuit, which are namely determined by exactly what your intended purpose is when putting one on. Firstly, there are the bodysuits that serve as base layers. It’s a style often preferred by Kim Kardashian, meant to hug the body and serve as a wrinkle-free bottom layer for loose tops or even sheer dresses. Then there is the bolder, cutout style — one that was seen on the runways of Mugler and Saint Laurent, and has been worn by performers like Dua Lipa and Doja Cat. This iteration is the perfect option for night-out dressing because it can be easily worn with a pair of relaxed jeans or a miniskirt. Lastly, you’ll want to consider the not-a bodysuit-bodysuit. These iterations have the same silhouette as the original, but they are made out of knit materials, cotton, or other non-traditional materials so that anyone other than the wearer will think it’s simply a top tucked in, without any of the bulges or wrinkles that typically comes with layering. Brands like Khaite and Nanushka have perfected this style, offering elegant takes that can be worn for formal occasions or even the office.

The Different Types of Bodysuits

  • High neck bodysuits: This design, often in cotton or a stretch spandex material, is a great layering piece as temperatures cool. It can be layered under sweaters or jackets and add an extra touch of warmth.

  • Cutout bodysuits: For nights out, this iteration is the best option. It’s a playful way to show some skin and can be easily styled back to leather or denim bottoms.

  • Lingerie bodysuits: When you’re stuck figuring out how to style a sheer dress, a bodysuit can be your best friend. Try a style that’s meant to serve as an alternative to your usual underwear.

  • Spandex bodysuits: If you’re looking for a bodysuit that will hug closely to your skin, this is the style to consider. It’s comfortable and should move with you as you go about your day.

  • T-Shirt bodysuits: Ever get annoyed trying to tuck in a t-shirt? This style of bodysuit is made to look like your average tee, but is actually a full body design. Consider replacing your usual tee with this instead.

What Type of Bra Should I Wear with a Bodysuit?

When deciding what type of bra to wear with a bodysuit, you’ll first want to evaluate the style that you’ll be wearing as well as the occasion. Many modern bodysuits, especially those meant to act as a base layer, have a bra or bralette built in to offer extra support. But, if you’re wearing a style where a bra is a necessary addition, keep in mind what purpose the bra is meant to serve — usually support or coverage. If opting for a cutout bodysuit, you’ll want a minimal option like a strapless bra that hides easily beneath the bodysuit, but won’t slip or slide. For second-skin bodysuits, you’ll want a bra that offers a smoothing effect, so avoid any lace or texture that might show through. And for sheer bodysuits, you may want to choose a bra that you don’t mind showing off a bit — have fun with it!
