Parking lots were at full capacity, and openings to park on the grass filled quickly as the 7:30 p.m. start time drew closer for Madison Comprehensive High School's 97th annual commencement on Friday night.

“215 students met the requirements to graduate,” said Karen VonStein, Career Tech Assessment Coordinator.

The students have a solid work ethic, she said.

“They never give up; they’re very determined,” VonStein said before the start of the ceremony.

Simple advice came from the opening remarks.

“Wherever you go,” said Makenzee Webb, “go with all of your heart.”

Superintendent Rob Peterson couldn’t have been prouder.

“Over half have 3.0 GPA or higher,” Peterson said. “33% have a GPA of 3.5 or higher; 13 Valedictorians with 4.0 throughout all of high school; $5 million in scholarships.”

The crowd rose for two standing ovations: One for those entering the military after graduation, and one for Jeffrey Whisler, a survivor of a skateboarding accident in 2021.

“Not only is he here tonight,” Peterson said, “he is going to walk across this stage.”

The audience roared.

Four Valedictorians were chosen to speak.

“Thank you to our teachers,” said Riley Kershner.

Lockdowns and virtual classrooms fortified their determination.

“We are so much more resilient,” said Breanna Ford, reflecting on lessons from COVID.

Graduation Day begins their next journey.

“As we become the best versions of ourselves, said Kylie Stout, “always remember where you came from; I want to thank my mom, my true best friend.”

"Congratulations, class of 2022,” said Alexis Papst.

COVID-19 distractions didn’t stop them.

“It’s hard to believe we’re really here,” said Addyson Cox, class president. “If high school taught us anything, we are unstoppable.”

“I am planning to make a difference,” said Aliena Carter. “I want other children to know that there is someone out there who is willing to love them, through fostering or adoption.”

“I want to become a child protector,” said Trinity Hatfield.”I want to help them find stability in their life, either mentally or emotionally. I want to make a difference for kids in the system; to show them nobody’s alone.”
