21-year-old arrested in suspicion of fatal hit-and-run near Old Tucson

The Pima County Sheriff's Department arrested a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run collision in July that killed 26-year-old David Moreno near Old Tucson.

Officials said 21-year-old Alex Maldonado was arrested around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at the port of entry in Nogales. The Dodge Charger that he was driving when he was arrested was taken in as evidence.

On July 25 around 8 a.m. Tucson Mountain patrol arrived at Kinney and Gates Pass roads and found Moreno lying on the roadway after being hit by a vehicle, according to officials. He died at the scene.

After the crash, officials released a photo of a vehicle described by the Sheriff's Office as a 2013 black Dodge Charger with damage to the windshield and front passenger side front. It is unclear if that is the same vehicle the Sheriff's Office took into evidence.

Customs and Border Patrol did not respond to a request for comment.

Maldonado was being held at the Santa Cruz County Jail and will be extradited to Pima County, the Sheriff's Office said.

According to Pima County officials, Maldonado faces charges for failure to remain on the scene of a fatal collision.
