2022 Shining Light Awards now accepting nominations

Nominations are open for the 2022 Shining Light Awards, which recognize exceptional current and emerging leaders who are making an impact on the region.

The Detroit Free Press and Metropolitan Affairs Coalition launched the Shining Light Awards in 2007 to highlight the importance of regional leadership and cooperation to the success of southeast Michigan, honoring leaders whose work crosses geographic, institutional or cultural boundaries to improve the region. The awards are named in memory of the late Neal Shine, former Detroit Free Press editor and publisher, and honor his legacy of dedication to metro Detroit.

The Neal Shine Award for Exemplary Regional Leadership is a lifetime achievement award recognizing a person who has encouraged regional cooperation and understanding in a prominent way over their careers. The Eleanor Josaitis Unsung Hero Award recognizes a leader who has done this important work behind the scenes. The Dave Bing Future Leader Award recognizes a young leader who is contributing to a shared sense of community and regional cooperation.

The 2021 Shining Light honorees were: Isaiah "Ike" McKinnon, recipient of the Neal Shine Award for Exemplary Leadership, Dr. Asha Shajahan, recipient of the Eleanor Josaitis Unsung Hero Award and Robert Reaves, recipient of the Dave Bing Future Leader Award.

Candidates can be nominated for the three categories — future leader, unsung hero and exemplary regional leadership — until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, June 29. Submit a nomination using the form below. Email questions to info@shininglightawards.com.
