General Motors' Super Cruise advanced driver-assistance system is one of the best on the market. With the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado models just around the corner, GM has added some new features to the system tailored to truck customers. More specifically, Super Cruise will now function with a trailer in tow.

Super Cruise utilizes precision LiDAR-generated map data, real-time camera systems, and GPS sensors to navigate its way through roadways. Combined with the camera-based driver monitoring system inside the cabin, the software is pretty smart. With this latest update, Super Cruise will also estimate the total weight of the vehicle and whatever trailer is hitched out back. After the weight is calculated, Super Cruise functions entirely the same as it would without a trailer installed. We first reported that the automaker was working on such a feature back in December of 2020. Now that development is finished, the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali will be the first pickup truck on the market capable of such a hands-free feat.

The changes to Super Cruise don't stop there, however. Previously, the system required the driver to signal lane changes before any movement would take place. With this update for 2022, the system will now be able to execute lane changes on its own. By monitoring the speed of traffic surrounding the vehicle, Super Cruise will decide which lane is the most appropriate for traveling or passing. The new features will not function together, unfortunately, as automatic lane changing is disabled as soon as a trailer is hitched.

The 2022 GMC Sierra Denali isn't the only GM vehicle that will receive the updated Super Cruise features. The Cadillac Escalade and the GMC Hummer EV are both slated to get the tech, as is the Sierra's sibling, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado. Other vehicles like the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 will also get Super Cruise, though we don't expect folks to be utilizing the towing feature with those offerings. For now, we just have to wait for the refreshed pickups to arrive.
