When thinking about home organization, you might be familiar with the phrases “sparking joy” and the “KonMari method,” both of which were coined by Marie Kondo when she was introduced to the American audience in 2014. But there’s one other dynamic duo that has been transforming small spaces since 2015 that you should have on your radar.

As Americans became obsessed with Marie Kondo-ing their dressers with specific folding techniques, the women behind The Home Edit, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, were secretly disrupting the drawer-organizing scene with some of the most aesthetically pleasing pantry, fridge and closet masterpieces. The two have since been known for emphasizing a more “stylized aesthetic.”

By implementing a labeling system, using clear organizers and sorting by color, the Home Edit has re-invented traditional organizing with the goal of merging organization with design and interior styling.

At one point, the team literally competed neck and neck with Marie Kondo to see who had more Instagram followers (The Home Edit now has more than 1.5 million followers). The two, however, didn’t receive a major spike in popularity until after completing a few celebrity projects, including Gwyneth Paltrow’s pantry, Mandy Moore’s closet, Khloe Kardashian’s pantry and Kacey Musgrave’s closet.

Today, Shearer and Teplin boast that they are “canister enthusiasts and turntable advocates” (both items always find themselves in the end result of any project the two take on). And we can’t blame them — anyone who appreciates a well-organized space loves these type of organizers too.

With a Reese Witherspoon-produced series called “Master the Mess” that debuted in 2018, an organizing book that published in 2019 and another book coming this September, The Home Edit is filling our lives with organized bliss. The pair is even expected to get their own Netflix series soon.

As someone who’s obsessed with organizing (seeing a well-organized space instantly makes my heart start racing), I couldn’t wait to share some organizing tips from The Home Edit that you can implement in your own home.

Speaking exclusively with In The Know, Shearer and Teplin shared some of their favorite organizing hacks, along with some of their favorite (and affordable) products to help get you started.

If someone is just starting out to organize their homes and they are overwhelmed, what room or space would you say is the easiest to tackle first?

The most important thing to remember is to start off small. You don’t want to jump right in by taking on a full closet. A drawer is the best starting point because it’s manageable and small, so the end result will feel like a big win.

What is one of your favorite organizing tricks that is a must-share with every client?

We always tell our clients that it’s important to get a system in place that works for them. But one of our tried-and-true tips is to label, label, label. It’s one of the best ways to get organized and helps with grouping like items together. That way, you know where everything is, so you’re not stuck searching for an item when you need it.

What are some of the easiest ways to utilize organizers in every room of your home?

We’re all about making the most of your space and finding products that are easy to use. That’s why we love Command Brand. Whether it’s hanging up brooms and mops in the pantry with the Command Broom Gripper or jackets and purses in the office with the Command Large Double Hook, there’s a product for every room. The best part? You don’t have to worry about causing any damage or leaving holes in your walls! That’s a big no-no for us.

What are some ways to use organizing products to maximize a vertical space, especially if space is limited in a small apartment?

Don’t eliminate any blank space. Forgotten areas like under the sink are a hidden gem for organization. Lift items like spray bottles off the floor and store them on the inside of the cabinet using the Command Spray Bottle Hanger. This helps clear the bottom of your cabinet and opens up space for clear bins to store other items like paper towels, wipes or sponges.

If you could suggest one favorite, must-have organizing product to invest in, what would it be?

Turntables are great. They keep products easily accessible and in sight in some of the smallest areas, like under a cabinet.
