Bindi Irwin honors her father in last-minute wedding ceremony: ‘We changed everything’

Bindi Irwin had to change her wedding plans completely, but she still managed to honor her dad.

The 21-year-old, who is the daughter of the late, legendary zookeeper Steve Irwin, was originally set to marry professional wakeboarder Chandler Powell in April, according to People.

But those plans changed, largely due to the family’s increasing concerns over social distancing. In addition to moving the date to March 25, they also decided against having guests in attendance.

Bindi still called the wedding a “beautiful day,” sharing an Instagram post in which she revealed exactly how she paid respect to her father during the ceremony.

“There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now,” Bindi’s post read. “We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding.

The newlywed went on to call the rescheduling a “difficult decision,” but one that was important “to keep everyone safe.”

“We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos,” she added.

Bindi also wrote that she lit a candle in memory of her father, a heartwarming step she and her mother, Terri Irwin, had both previously discussed doing. The couple also held their wedding at the Australia Zoo, which was managed by Steve for years and was originally founded by his father, Bob Irwin.

“Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this – stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS,” Bindi added on Instagram.

The zoo is also where the couple got engaged, with Powell proposing on July 24, 2019 — which was Bindi’s 21st birthday.
