Restaurant sees 'extraordinary' success after making surprising adjustment: ‘I'm at a loss really'
A restaurant near Chicago is experiencing major success after making one crucial adjustment to its menu.
The Beacon Tap, located in Des Plaines, Ill., announced a new deal the week of March 16 — just as restaurants across the country were moving away from in-store service.
In order to encourage customers to dine with them without actually coming inside, the restaurant is now offering a free roll of toilet paper with every delivery or take-out order, WMAQ-TV reports.
The move comes amid a nationwide shortage of toilet paper, which began as Americans started stocking up for an extended period of stay-at-home time. And apparently, the idea is working.
“We had an extraordinary day yesterday, which was mind-blowing,” Tommy Riemer, the restaurant’s general manager, told WMAQ-TV the day after he announced the deal. “I’m at a loss really. It hit a lot of us yesterday that we were working. We were able to bring in extra employees yesterday because we were so busy and it was really awesome.”
Riemer said the idea for the deal came after a meeting he had with other managers in his restaurant group. After a colleague suggested a toilet paper promotion, Riemer was quick to act.
“I immediately made a phone call to [our toilet paper supplier] … and ordered as much as I could so we could offer it to customers as a little comic relief,” he told WMAQ-TV.
Riemer ordered 300 rolls and began advertising on Facebook that he’d deliver them on any take-out order, as well as on deliveries within a 6-mile radius. He gave away 80 in just a little more than a day.
The deal came at a crucial time for the Beacon Tap — and restaurants throughout Illinois. A statewide order forced all restaurants to close their dine-in services on March 16, just one day before the toilet paper offer began.
“It’s scary for a lot of people,” Riemer said of the new rule. “They say two weeks. We all know it’s not going to be two weeks. It’s definitely going to be longer and we have to be set up and prepared for it and everyone needs to support one another.”
But for now, Riemer’s restaurant is seeing a glimmer of success — and his customers are getting plenty of toilet paper in the meantime. The manager told WMAQ-TV that he’s glad the deal can help both his customers and staff during a tough time.
“We’re all just trying to do what we can to help each other out,” Riemer said.
