2 people airlifted following I-95 crash

Jun. 24—LUMBERTON — Two people have been airlifted after a Thursday morning crash on Interstate 95 that backed up traffic for a little more than an hour.

The crash happened about 10:24 a.m. when a motor home struck the bridge structure at U.S. 301 at the 25 mile marker, said 1st Sgt. S.B. Lewis, of the State Highway Patrol. Two people were airlifted to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Their names were not immediately released.

Traffic was halted for southbound motorists until about 11:33 a.m. when traffic officials opened one lane of the interstate, Lewis said.

Motorists were previously detoured to Exit 31 at N.C. 20. They were routed to U.S. 301 South then back to I-95 South.

Jose Gonzalez was one motorist in traffic held up by the wreck. He described seeing helicopters overhead and being stopped in traffic with miles of cars lined up ahead.

"This is crazy and there's no way to move out of here," he told The Robesonian about 11:30 a.m. just before traffic opened up.

The Robesonian will update this story as more information becomes available.
