First responders, community cope with tragedy

Shannon Moss, spokesperson for Maine State Police, said detectives and evidence technicians have worked throughout the night and into Sunday "investigating, interviewing family members, victims, neighbors, etc."

Moss added, "Anytime you have a family that’s been involved in a shooting, and there is a loss of life, particularly a child, it’s a tragedy. It’s incredibly sad and it takes a toll on everyone. The family, the community, and the first responders."

Wells Police Capt. Kevin Chabot, a 21-year veteran, noted Wells police and emergency personnel handled the initial response before Maine State Police took over the case. He said police understand the shootings are difficult for the entire community.

"It's why we train, we stay educated," he said. "We are police but we human beings in a uniform. We have children of our own and this can be hard. We see all types of incidents, but we have a pretty good network of support, from peers, from mental health services."

Peer support services and assistance programs are available for police, fire and EMS personnel if needed, he said.

Likewise, Moss said, "Maine State Police has support available for any trooper who needs to debrief after a difficult call or case."
