2 dead after accident on Route 222 near Berks line, police say [Update]

Sep. 28—Two female occupants of a car died after it collided Tuesday with the back of a commercial truck that was stopped on the shoulder of southbound Route 222 south of the Reading interchange for the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lancaster County.

The crash happened about 4 p.m. in East Cocalico Township between the Denver and Ephrata exits.

The ensuing investigation closed the southbound lanes for four hours at the Route 568/Route 272 exit in Brecknock Township, Berks County, just north of Adamstown.

According to East Cocalico police:

Officers found the truck on the right shoulder of the road and the car on the left shoulder.

Two of the three people in the car were thrown from the car. One was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was taken to Lancaster General Hospital, where she died.

Police withheld their names pending notification of their next of kin.

The third occupant was transported to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the truck was uninjured.
